Cold sores are red blisters filled with fluid, that develop
on the lips and the surrounding skin, or sometimes appear around the nose or
cheek. Normally, cold sores last between 7-12 days, during which they go
through 5 stages.
1. Tingling Stage
Also known as the early stage or prodrome stage, this lasts
for 1-2 days. A tingling, itchy or burning sensation occurs in the area in
which the cold sore is forming. The area becomes red and swollen due to an
inflammatory reaction to the infection.
2. Blister Stage
Lasting 2 days, this stage is when a fluid-filled blister
develops. It may look like a small group of lumps that can multiply and grow.
3. Weeping Stage
Also known as the ulcer stage, this only lasts for a day,
but can be the most painful. This is when the blister bursts and leaves an open
sore, oozing liquid that contains millions of infectious viruses. This stage is
when the cold sore is at its most contagious, and can be spread very easily.
4. Scabbing Stage
During this stage that typically lasts 2-3 days, the cold
sore dries and a crust forms, forming a scab. Usually the scab breaks and
bleeds, possibly causing itchiness and a burning feeling. A second, smaller
scab forms where the first scab breaks, flakes off and the cycle repeats with a
smaller scab forming.
5. Healing Stage
Eventually, the scab disappears, usually without scarring,
although the skin may remain slightly pink or red.
